Leagues Come and Go

Various professional sports leagues attempted to establish teams in Charlotte. More often than not, the leagues folded before teams could become integral parts of the Charlotte sports scene. Teams included

Charlotte Hornets of the World Football League (1974-1975)
Carolina Chargers of the American Football Association (1980s)
Carolina Blaze of the National Women's Basketball Association (folded before the Charlotte-based league played a game in 1986)
Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League
Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League
Charlotte Sting of the Women's National Basketball Association (1997-2006, team folded)
