Answers to the quiz:

  1. When was the American Legion Memorial Stadium completed?
    Answer: 1936.  The first event hosted in the new venue was the opening dedication by President Franklin D. Roosevelt at a Green Pastures Rally to kick off his reelection campaign in the South.

  2. When was the "old" coliseum (now Bojangles Coliseum) built?
    Answer: September 1, 1955.  After a dedication by Dr. Billy Graham, the Ice Capades began a sold-out run.

  3. What is the oldest continuous sports event in Charlotte?  What was the second until recently?
    Answers:  The Carolinas Golden Gloves, first held in 1933, followed by the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas held in 1937.  The Golden Gloves now include fighters from Virginia, and the Shrine Bowl is now held in Spartanburg, SC.

  4. The Hornets at Griffith Park were a farm team for which major league team?
    Answer: The Washington Senators, and later the Minnesota Twins after the team moved.

  5. Where was Charlotte's first major speedway and when did it operate?
    Answer: The board track with wooden stands on Pineville Road (near where Lance is now) opened on October 24, 1924.  The last race was held in October 1927.  The track became a hazard due to the wooden boards popping up.
