Local rhetoric would have you believe Charlotte was a city on the way up but could not support the sports franchises of its targeted status as a world-class city.
An August 1980 article in the Charlotte Observer quotes Charlotte Motor Speedway manager Humpy Wheeler as saying, "Charlotte isn't a good sports town." He qualifies the remark by noting that Charlotte has the spectators, but not the promotion.
