Hockey

When their arena burned in 1956, the Baltimore Clippers thought they found a temporary home in Charlotte.  However, strong local support led to the franchise's permanent relocation.  But the renamed Charlotte Checkers would fold in 1977 along with the Southern Hockey League.  Hockey returned to Charlotte in 1993, and today the Checkers are in their first season as members of the top-tier American Hockey League.
