Southern Stigma

Race and religion have historically complicated life in the South.  Charlotte attempted to be more progressive on race issues than its peers throughout the South by instituting civil rights ordinances before the 1964 federal act.  Also, blue laws created tension between church and state. 

These complications arose on the Charlotte sports scene as well.
