Description
Aerial photo of Memorial Stadium, armory and surrounding neighborhoods in Charlotte, NC as they looked circa early 1950s. The National Guard Armory stood originally where The Park Center/Grady Cole Center now stands. It burned in about 1954. This image shows the old National Guard Armory and Memorial Stadium at Kings Drive and Elizabeth Boulevard. Most of the area in the photo is now part of the main Central Piedmont Community College Campus. The Armory housed the National Guard organizations and was considered the best equipped armory in the State. The basement floor was equipped with the latest in target carriers and was used by National Guard and Civilian Marksmanship Clubs. The upper floor was used for sports, dances, shows, etc., with approximately 200 events each year. The American Legion Memorial Stadium was completed in 1937 and seated 15,386. It has been the venue for many college and high school football games over the years, as well as many special events. [32 - Dixie News Co., Charlotte, NC - 6A-H2107]
