Southern States Fair Ground
Description
Aerial view of the Southern States Fair Ground, just north of the Charlotte, NC city limits. This attraction was opened in 1939 by Dr. J.S. Dorton on Highway 29 at the corner of Tryon and Sugar Creek. Southern States Fairgrounds was a half mile dirt track in Charlotte NC. It featured stock cars, open wheel racers, and motorcycle races during its era. Almost 100 acres, the grounds included exhibition buildings, and a lake as well as the race track and grandstand. The Shout Freedom! pageant was held there in 1948, and Voice in the Wilderness Pageant was held in 1955. The fair stayed open until 1959. [38 - Dixie News Co., Charlotte, NC - OB-H2469]
